Dr. Essam Abdulaziz Al Shail was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1963. He received his MBBS degree from King Saud University in 1987 and his Fellowship in Neurological Surgery from King Faisal University in 1995 both in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Over the years of his experience and medical practice, Dr. Al Shail became expert in the field of Paediatric Neurosurgery and Microvascular surgery
In 1995, he joined the Neurosurgery Division of University of Toronto, as a Chief Clinical Fellow (Administrative) and in 1998 he joined the Neurosciences Department of King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSH&RC) as a Consultant Neurosurgeon. He became the Medical Director of OR Management from 2006-2010. He was also appointed as Head of Neurosurgery and the Deputy Chairman of the Department of Neurosciences Department of KFSH&RC, from 2007-2015 and 2011-2013, respectively. He is actively involved in many Fellowship and training program within KFSH&RC and affiliated institutions.
He is currently an Associate Professor in the College of Medicine of Al Faisal University. Dr. Al Shail also involved himself in research studies and became an Adjunct Scientist in the Research Centre of KFSH&RC. He has been Principal Investigator, Co-investigator or Collaborator in competitive local institutional grants. As a result of his research findings, he was granted a patent in seven (7) countries and still waiting of another 6 patent applications. He published 38 peer-reviewed full length papers and contributor in some books. He is currently engaged in running a training lab for Microvascular surgery.
He was appointed by Pan Arab Neurosurgical Society as Chairman of the Paediatric Chapter last 2014 and recently, he was elected as the President of the newly founded Arab Paediatric Neurosurgical Society.
